the Teka Brock Band / Bio

How long have you been singing? What got you started?

Since I was a little girl with my mom ( Kaleen) and sister (Mika ) - we were home schooled and mom played a little guitar so we always had music class but we also listened to the am radio while we saddled horses, fed cows, in the pickup to ropings or to town - Mika and I also played out folks old records every chance we could - our favorites were old Dolly Parton records and Marty Robbins

How long have you been in Sheridan? What brought you here?

I moved to Sheridan in the fall of 1999, I received a rodeo scholarship and my sister was already here going through the dental hygiene program and rodeoing for Sheridan College - so I came in 99 and have been off and on here till 2008 when I moved here after living in MT for a year, attending UW on another rodeo scholarship and living/ working in Gillette for awhile

How long has the Teka Brock Band been together? How did you form?

We have been together going on 6 yrs - we formed in Story when I was living up there - I met a couple folks who wanted to play and sing and I had met , Jarod Judd, bassist through my cousin Kaci and just kinda told him " we are starting a band and we have a gig in a couple weeks " haha - so silly cause we had no set lists, hadnt really played at all, and didn't have any equipment but it all worked out the way it should have

What is the farthest the band has traveled for a performance?

Pry the farthest has been Durango, CO it's about 700 miles from Sheridan one way - Jarod and I have done a 2 piece deal while in Ojai, CA although we flew and borrowed equipment so it wasn't a full band deal

What was your favorite performance to date and why?

It's a toss up but we really loved playing at the "Red ants pants music festival " in white sulphur springs, MT this past summer but we also really love the " Mangy Moose " in Teton Village, WY and we also enjoy the local venues at Blacktooth Brewery, 3rd Thur street fest, Big West Fest and Warehouse 201 - we get alot of support from our hometown with gives us momentum to travel out of town and play as well

What would you tell an aspiring singer hoping to “make it big”?

Just be true to what you like to play and sing- hold onto your roots  don't let others mold you into something you won't like later on- people listening will respect you and enjoy you more when they can tell you love what you play and sing

Are there any other artists in your family?

My aunt Cindy Mohseni is a painter, and my cousins ( her 3 boys - jackson, logan and Gus ) play instruments,  my sister sings a little, my cousin Carrie (Switzer ) Turner's husband plays and sings with Todd Hannigan and Jack Johnson recorded his first album " fairytabs" in Tyler's bathroom in Ojai, CA as well as shirt tail relation through our Switzer side to Dave England from Jackass - but that's about all I can think of in the fam

What other hobbies and careers do you have?

Like Mentioned earlier I grew up rodeoing from when I was young to the intercollegiate level and still team rope at times, I learned how to play guitar about 7 yrs ago, i manage and book the TBB and also manage the bar and bartend a couple nights a week at Little Goose Liquors, I groom for polo players in the summer, play golf when I can, ill play a little blackjack  too if and when someone wants to "pony up the dough" ( kidding ) iv worked  in the coal mine driving truck and running rubber tire dozer ( check out a video on YouTube called " I wanna live like Elvis " I was working that day ) built houses in Gillette and ran dozer on a pipeline - but iv figured out I like to work at night in the entertainment industry and try and sleep in - I like being a starving musician, it's always been a dream of mine to play and sing so I feel like I am indeed " living my dream "

What is your favorite thing about Sheridan?

I love the western town feel but yet the artistry that comes out of Sheridan is very eclectic, everyone has their own style of art and music - I love that we have mountains and lakes and bad lands, that the WYO rodeo is such a huge event and then everyone can put their white pants on and come out and watch polo in big horn for the day - the people who live in this area are tough but compassionate - I love the history of the country as well - So proud to have such good friends - Sheridan is home to  King Ropes and various other family owned businesses - i like that my heritage comes from this part of the country too - both sides of my parents families were from around here - the Brock's near Kaycee and the Switzer's from Sheridan - Sam Morton's book "Where the Rivers Run North " sums it up pretty well

Anything else you would like to share?

Thank you Sheridan for all do to support the arts and also support The Teka Brock band -  and a special thank you to our family of sponsors "Big Horn Beverage " and " C&K equipment " we love you !
