Phruishun (aka Tony Spires) is a veteran multi-disciplinary artist: Poet-Spoken Word-Lyrics&Groove Artist/Filmmaker/Theatre Artist/Musician/Youth Arts Educator & Producer/Comedy Festival Producer(Founder of the legendary Bay Area Black Comedy Competition and Festival)/Columnist/Personal Manager. He has been a prolific poet for more than three decades.
Perpetually the “Artivist”(artist/activist), his latest offering is “PARADIGM SHIFT” a powerful Spoken Word and Contemporary Music CD project that serves both disciplines well. PARADIGM SHIFT fuses the mediums of poetry/spoken word and singing, on a politically-charged canvas of rhythmic R&B, Hip Hop and Jazz, which he calls “Lyrics&Groove.”
The perspective is spiritual, inspirational, motivational, critical, political, topical and historical. The 16 tracks are powered by Phruishun’s unique grasp of the language, his progressive musical sensibilities and his fiery passion for the equality of his people. “PARADIGM SHIFT “speaks directly to the times.
“It’s just what comes natural to me,” answers Phruishun when asked about his use of music to drive home his poetic message. “My duty as a Child of God is to care for his people. My duty as an artist is to be creative and unrelenting and to share the art, to be expressive and to tell the truth. My duty as a citizen of this planet is to try to help bring it peace. My duty as a Black Man is to help make our present and future better and never forget our past. My duty to myself is to be the best I can be at every endeavor I undertake.”
