Right now you would have to go to Houston, TX to find out why Leslie Krafka has been wowing the acoustic music scene there. But it won't be very long until everyone else finds out. The release of her debut album, The White Cat Sessions introduces the listener to her Texas flavored blend of folk, rock, and country, and what an introduction it is!
Krafka did not have a typical songwriter’s childhood. There were no musicians in her immediate family, but there was still plenty of music in the house growing up. Some of her earliest memories involved music. She remembers as toddler who hated taking naps; she had to at least lie down on the bed for the entire length of one of her mother’s albums. The year Leslie started Junior High her family moved to Houston and she discovered FM radio. She ingested a steady stream of Top 40 music until her older brother came home from the University of Texas in Austin with a cache of albums from the Alt-Country, Cosmic Cowboy, Texas songwriter’s scene. Folks like, Willie Nelson, Ray Willie Hubbard, Jerry Jeff Walker and The Lost Gonzo Band, Little Feat and more; those artists swayed Leslie’s taste in music. Then Leslie Krafka did the most important thing a songwriter can do: she lived her life, got married and raised a family. One year Krafka got an anniversary present from her husband that changed everything. He gave her a weekend away at Terri Hendrix songwriter’s workshop. Armed with a cheap guitar and only a few weeks of guitar lessons, Krafka found herself performing the first song she’d ever written with Lloyd Maines backing her up. Lightning struck, and the rest was just a matter of time.
Krafka was named the Songwriter of the Year 2010 by the Houston Songwriters Association, who also voted her song Wandering Troubadour as Song of the Year 2010. The White Cat Sessions shows that this was no fluke. The album is a wonderful collection of portraits and stories. Krafka sings these songs with a wonderful mix of warmth and grit. All in all, The White Cat Sessions marks the arrival of an important new talent.
