Nervous Rex / Bio

Nervous Rex was accidentally formed in June of 2004 by four rock and jazz musicians of curiously diverse backgrounds, who happened to share a passion for music and the desire to express it in its many colors. This formed the basis of a crazy experiment, and a week after formally introducing the members of the band to each other, Nervous Rex played their first gig. The experiment proved to be a success when they were invited back to play the following week.

The band took off faster than anyone would have expected. In their first year, they earned a house band gig, and played at Sturgis on the River and the Rockin’ Rib Fest. The band went their own separate ways in early 2007, after two of the members moved to Los Angeles, California. The band had a brief revival with some new members, but the band and the name were officially retired in 2008.

In 2012 Robert returned to the Quad Cities and we reunited the classic lineup of the band for a few shows. Now that Jerry and Vid are playing the old songs together again, “a few shows” just won’t do! We’ve enlisted the guitar and vocal talents of our frequent collaborator, Jeff “Doc VH” VenHorst. Nervous Rex is back together, with an updated sound!

Nervous Rex wants nothing more than for their audience to share their enthusiasm for music. Not ones to rest on their laurels, they challenge themselves with an eclectic and evolving repertoire of old and new songs, mainstream hits, hidden gems, and forgotten wonders. “Unique”, “one-of-a-kind”, and “unlike any other” are three terms that mean the same thing: Nervous Rex.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From what their audience says, they are fully meeting that objective:

“There's not much these guys don't play. One of the widest varieties I've ever heard in a band. Blues, Country, Classic Rock, Classic Hard Rock, to current hits fresh off the radio, they play it all, and very well. …While I can't dance, I don't think my foot stopped moving the whole set of Nervous Rex's. Jim and I were even singing "Ride Sally Ride" at our table during Mustang Sally. I can't sing, but we couldn't help ourselves. Thanks guys, you capped our night out perfectly.” - John Pepping, Rock Beat July 11, 2005

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The energy of the band and their love of music never allows them to stand still. Their set list is constantly changing, and they are bound to learn at least one new song a week.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“… the band - all of which plays by ear - prides itself in taking songs hot of the radio and adding them to its setlist …” - David Burke, Quad City Times, June 16, 2005

Member bios:

Jerry Heard - Bass Guitar, Vocals

Jerry Heard brings a remarkably high degree of experience and professionalism to any ensemble that has the privilege of performing with him. Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Jerry has been playing bass for over 35 years. Currently, he plays in the band Wild Oatz, a Contemporary Country group performing all the latest country hits, but in his career he has played everything from Jazz to Blues, Contemporary Pop to Classic Rock. He also plays and records with The V.J.J. Groove, a blues band preparing to release their debut album of original material.

Prior to joining Wild Oatz, he played in (among others) Stellar Cellar, Why Not?, and Blues Flash. Jerry is a founding member of Nervous Rex.

David “Vid” James - Drums/percussion, Vocals

Vid hails from Miami, Florida, and grew up…everywhere. After settling down in the Quad Cities, he started making his way to local open blues jams, where he met Jerry Heard, with whom he eventually co- founded Nervous Rex.

Vid’s experience on the local cover band scene runs the gamut; he is, or has been, a member of Mr. Tripod, TPX, Wicked Nature, The Undertones, The Knockoffs, The Metro Gnomes, and The V.J.J. Groove. He can occasionally be found sitting in with a variety of local bands, as well as The District Theatre band and Circa 21.

Jeff “Doc VH” VenHorst - Guitar, Vocals

Equally skilled in blues, country, and screamin’ metal, Doc VH has been a consistent fixture on the music scene for many years as a member of many bands; including The Tommy Knockers, Just Cuz, TPX, The Knockoffs, and the Metro Gnomes. Though new to Nervous Rex, Doc has been playing with us for a long time: along with Vid and Jerry, Jeff plays and records with The V.J.J. Groove.

Robert Geiger - occasional guest on Guitar, Keyboards

Robert is a musician with enormous talent. Originally a keyboard player, Robert started playing guitar after seeing a Stevie Ray Vaughan video, and “wanted to be able to do that”. During his 4-year tenure in L.A., he had the opportunity to reconnect with his keyboardist roots, and returned to the Quad Cities with recharged talent on both instruments.
