Professional Drummer & Percussionist
Charlie Wood was raised in a wonderfully enriching musical environment. His grandfather Phil Lyons led his septet “The Victorians” to modest success during the 1930’s Philadelphia swing scene. Phil was an accomplished, respected piano player and band leader amongst Philadelphia and New York musicians.
As a child Charlie remembers listening to his grandfather at the family piano laying down all the standards of the day. “Those days were fantastic from what I remember” says Charlie who believed that period in time helped shape his outlook on music. “You know I learned early on it was about performing the song with a smile on your face. It’s not about how good a player you become because each of us has our technical limits. The question becomes how can I perform the song well enough that the listener is enjoying it.”
After gathering the necessary fundamentals for his instrument through private and institutional drum set and musical performance studies, Charlie hastily made his move for the practical musical experiences found in New York City. While in New York Charlie worked and recorded with some of the top producers, sound engineers and musicians. The list includes Bernard Edwards (Chic bassist, songwriter & producer) Richie Havens (famed opener at Woodstock), Kevin Rudolf (Lil’ Wayne/Cash Money Records), Larry Alexander (Grammy award winning audio engineer), and Michael Patterson (Grammy nominated audio engineer) and others. In addition Charlie was an active member in the downtown New York City scene of the 1990’s writing and performing with modern music group NYC PAINT.
