I was born in a small town near the edge of the Colorado Plateau. As a child I was encouraged and inspired to pursue music by my family and community. I started lessons on violin at age ten but lost interest in it after my father passed away. To keep myself sane through my early teens I wrote poems that I had set to heavy rock music in my head.
Other adolescent influences that I can remember are mostly metal and heavy rock bands like The White Stripes, Nine Inch Nails, Black Sabbath, King Crimson and Tool, however as I got older I started deviating from distorted guitars and rock rhythms and started falling in love with more acoustic rootsy lyric driven bands and artists.
I played bass in a little garage band that learned a few covers and wrote mostly original (if unorthodox) rock tunes. I had just kind of picked up a bass and started teaching myself how to play (with help from a few friends and family members). On my seventeenth birthday one of my dad’s wives, bought me a nice dreadnought sized Yamaha acoustic guitar, which I finally started to play and learn covers via tablature.
I didn’t get any formal training until years later when I enrolled at SUU as a music major and began studying classical music and vocal performance in 2008. Some of what I’ve studied there shows up in my music from time to time and I’ve been very grateful of the education. As a solo acoustic artists I’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage with some incredible musicians such as Sean Hayes, Cory Mon and the Starlight Gospel, Pat & Rosie Maloney, Steve Swift, Joshua James, Blvd Park, and many, many others. It’s been a great ride so far, I can only hope it gets better from here.
