Planet 9 is best described as southern rock meets The Four Horsemen twisted with a little flavor of The Almighty. Vocalist/guitarist ‘AK’ creates seductive melodies with lyrics from life and reminiscent of the late great Frank Starr and Ricky Warwick.
Planet 9 the quintessential hard rock band from Ohio formed in 1999 and is best described as southern rock meets The Four Horseman with Kid Rock attitude twisted up with a little flavor of The Almighty. When you first lay ears on their sound, their influences speak clearly: AC DC, Metallica, The Cult, Black Sabbath, C.O.C, and Guns ‘n Roses. Each member has had their share of openers for national acts like Ace Frehley, Warrant, Mike Tramp (White Lion), Bullet Boys, Union, Dee Snider’s Widowmaker & SMF, Quiet Riot, Tuff, Steven Pearcy, and W.A.S.P.
Like so many other bands, Planet 9 went through member changes and took a hiatus from 2004-2007. In 2007, founding member Alan ‘AK’ Kennedy began writing with Ron Zingaro. They regrouped with founding member Rich Wilson and began the search for the perfect drummer. The right addition was found very close to home with Geof Wilson.
Jack Campitelli of Fishtank Audio was hired to record and produce their first endeavor. Recording commenced throughout 2010 and was completed in December of that year. Delivering serious ear candy to the rock ‘n roll connoisseur, front man/guitarist Alan ‘AK’ Kennedy creates seductive melodies with lyrics from life and reminiscent of the late great Frank Starr. The infectious groove grabs your attention and chokes it out like only true grit rock and roll can. Guitarist and backing vocalist Ron Zingaro adds to the brutal guitars and super charged riffs. The rhythm is tightly held down by Rich Wilson (bass) and Geof Wilson (drums).
Fans who turnout to the Planet 9 party best describe the bands sound as “dash board pounding”. AK’s front man swagger is reminiscent of the attitude of the early Guns ‘n Roses days. Planet 9 shows are like a wide open throttle from beginning to end.
