About BEND OVER BACKWARDS: Established 2010.
Walter was born in Toronto (North York) 1969. He grew up in a middle class family and was always a musical child. Although he never took formal music lessons (because his parents didn’t value or notice the special talent he had), he continued to practise the electric bass along with his older brother (on guitar) in the basement of his semi-detached suburban house. Walter’s early influences included RUSH, TRIUMPH, MAX WEBSTER, AC/DC, LED ZEPPELIN, and BLACK SABBATH.
In high school, he studied classical guitar from grades 9 to 12 always receiving the highest marks in the class. In Grade 11, he decided to indulge himself by playing the bass in concert band. He drove his teacher nuts by playing complex bass lines. He could never play what was written on the sheet music, always embellishing anything he could get his hands to play.
In 1991, Walter decided to major in music at York University where he continued to enhance his classical guitar playing skills. He graduated York University in 1996 with a degree in Fine Arts (Music), and from there went on to Teacher’s College to become an Elementary School teacher. After graduating Teacher’s College in 1997, Walter obtained a job with the Peel District School Board teaching Grade 5, and since then, has taught many other grades. Part of his assignment was to deliver the music curriculum to the Junior Level Grades (4-6). In 2010, Walter became a full time music teacher at his current school teaching recorder and Orff instruments to Grades 2-5, and Concert Band instruments to Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Walter’s love for composing music never died. He continued to write music not only for himself but for his students as well. In 1994, Walter released a children’s album called “Don’t Say Good-bye” under the name WALLY BEAVER - a cute little beaver with a (chipmunk) sounding voice. The album contained a number of educational, environmental tracks for children to sing. The album was designed to help children and adults learn how to care for and protect planet earth. Some of the tracks include Mother Earth, Are You Environmentally Friendly? The Next Generation, the self-titled album track, Don’t Say Good-bye, and many more.
It wasn’t until 2008 that Walter began to demonstrate some serious attitude about composing pop/rock music. Walter began writing songs for popular artists, such as Michael Bublé, Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift but ran into snags and obstacles when it came to actually promoting and delivering his songs to such artists. In the meantime, Walter created a band name for himself just in case he wrote enough material to release an actual album, and thus, in 2010 he came up with the name BEND OVER BACKWARDS.
BEND OVER BACKWARDS will hopefully inspire listeners to look beyond what the traditional record labels are currently releasing out in the (increasingly fragmented) music industry, and help people become aware that there are some independent music artists (such as Walter) who are talented enough to write material just as good as, if not better than some of the material that people are listening to on the radio, but for reasons unknown, can’t seem to connect with or be recognized by the major record labels. Walter decided it was time to do something proactive by becoming his own publisher and by becoming a self-promoter of his own music.
