Jan Schnell has lived in both Africa and his native Denmark, and he's been playing music for as long as he can remember.
From recording primitive punk rock on cassette to making music with top musicians, he's been writing and recording his own songs since his early teens.
But Jan's songwriting goes further back than that. "When I was a kid, I'd walk around singing song's I'd make up myself – not songs by other people," he says.
Jan played in several bands in Denmark in the late 1980s, and he's continued to explore new levels of expression in his songwriting – while always staying true to a basic honesty that he feels is the source of musical power.
"Most of my lyrics are about things that move me. They are a way for me, to deal with the insanity we humans are capable of doing to ourselves, others and to our environment, from the earliest civilizations to the present day."
"I also write a love song from time to time"
"Where would we be without love."
Jan is dedicated to wildlife conservation, and has contributed by making several wildlife music videos.
When recording vocals Jan Schnell never punches in and out. It's a rule he vigorously defends.
To get the full and honest expression, the whole verse or chorus should be recorded in 1 take.
"I have to be able to perform live, to the same standard as when I record in a studio."
Thanks so much for listening and waching.
