The Smoke People is a power trio based in New York City featuring sax player Luke Penella (Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Lifted Crew), bassist Dmitry Ishenko (Paul Banks, John Tchicai, Steve Lacy) & drummer Rob Mitzner (Sam Kininger Band, Jann Klose, I'm in You). The group combines jazz harmonies, rock effects, and high-energy funk grooves to produce a unique and genre-bending sound with diverse influences across the musical spectrum, including The Bad Plus, Radiohead, Bill Frisell, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, The Fringe, Alas No Axis, and Tony Williams' Lifetime. Bassist Ishenko uses a variety of ambient effects and loops create a wide sonic tapestry on which the group's original tunes are woven. Drummer Mitzner locks in the groove with boundless energy and creativity, while Penella's alto saxophone soars high above, evoking such masters as George Garzone, Kenny Garrett and Maceo Parker. Their first EP, due out in November 2014, features group compositions such as "3rd & McDonald", which features a buoyant drum-and-bass groove alternating with a heavier half-time rock feel; other selections include the slow and funky "Brian Uterus", and the jazzy odd-time signature tune "Vibe City" . In addition to recording the EP, the group has spent much of this year touring and playing festivals and clubs throughout the US.
