Kelly McMichael was raised in Peterborough, Ontario. From a young age, Kelly was involved in Peterborough’s unique and thriving arts community. After studying art at the University of Guelph, Kelly moved to Toronto, where she prioritized playing and writing music for three years, performing with Gentleman Reg, Rouge, Ohbijou, Sarah Harmer, Hidden Cameras, Forest City Lovers, Allie Hughes (ALX), The Magic and Devon Sproule. After doing some writing in Manchester, England in 2012, she decided to come back to Peterborough to put together a new band. Inspired by riot grrls Liz Phair and PJ Harvey, this project combines 90s femme-angst with a modern indie-pop flair. The band, "The Gloss", back Kelly up to create a high energy rock show.
The 5 song EP "Liminal", was recorded by James Bunton (Ohbijou, Evening Hymns, Diamond Rings). It was released in June 2013 and the band has been touring regularly through central and eastern Canada to promote it. In their review of the EP, the Torontoist said “McMichael’s dynamic, melting voice … brings a breathtaking, quiet command to softer moments. Liminal is something special.” Kelly McMichael and The Gloss were also on the BlogTO's list of 10 queer bands to look out for in 2014.
