Like many 20-somethings, Brent Phillip debated his career path during his time at Georgia State University in Atlanta. After some soul searching and consulting with close friends and family, he decided to put music at the forefront of his path, putting school on hold. Realizing his strong passion for music which stemmed from his Trinidadian roots and growing up listening to the eclectic array of music that his parents would play, ‘Genesis’ was born. And during the helm of Atlanta’s new, burgeoning music and art movement that was quickly gaining national attention as a prominent creative destination.
Genesis quickly purchased his first set of turntables and mixer, and spent months of practicing and perfecting his craft to develop a rich bank of unique, mystical and invigorating DJ set lists that span genres and generations. From the start, his sets ranged from the most underground beats that only hip-hop heads would recognize, to electronic rock, indie pop, 80s, 90s, millennial and everything in between. Genesis booked his first gig at the Southeast’s growing A3C Hip-Hop Music Festival in October 2010. The positive crowd response and engagement helped inspire Genesis to continue moving in this musical path. By 2011, respected Atlanta rapper Cyhi the Prynce caught on to unique musical experience that Genesis created and offered an opportunity to be the official DJ for Big Sean's Finally Famous Tour.
This experience and exposure helped Genesis to continue booking more prominent tours, including the 2050 Taylor Gang Tour (featuring Wiz Khalifa and Tuki Carter); the Under the Influence of Music Tour (featuring Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James, Joey Bada$$ and others). Genesis is now the permanent DJ for Atlanta rap phenomenon Trinidad James and world class visual and tattoo artist, PaperFrank.
Genesis’ creativity doesn’t stop at music. As a co-founding member of lifestyle apparel and merchandise brand, Full Time Levitators (alongside co-founders Mike Merlot and Cameron Bankhead), Genesis is transforming his understanding of culture and branding to expand his personal brand as a DJ, headlining major festivals in the U.S. and abroad, producing original music and designing and developing unique merchandise.
His namesake represents his true beliefs and mission in music: to always remember the beginning and never forget where things started. Through this lens, Genesis strives to spread awareness of the diverse musical selections available across regions, cultures and generations, using music as the center of unity and understanding.
