It’s fair to say that Alice BrightSky’s debut album has been in the pipeline for quite some time. The adoptive New Yorker began recording the album, alongside trusted producer Paolo DeGregorio back in 2006 after meeting in the Williamsburg Live Songwriting Competition where Paolo was a judge. Though the album was mostly done by 2009, one song (‘Up Up and Away’) wasn’t coming together. Not sure how to fix the tune and not wanting to release the album without it, Alice took a hiatus from music in which time she fell in love, got married and moved her life out of NYC and into a leafy locale more reminiscent of her small town roots. In 2012 she finally worked out the kinks on the tune, with the help of her friends, producers Mike Savino (of the Tall Tall Trees) and Brandon Wilde (of This Sway, Black Bunny, All Night Chemists and Niall Connolly), enabling the long overdue release of ‘Box of Me’.
This collection of heartfelt, honest, beautiful songs follows in the great tradition of singer-songwriters, with lyrically deep tales of love, loss and everything in between. Inspired by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake and Bjork, Alice blends old with new in her music, which at its heart is folk but around its edges is also rock, jazz and pop. A reference to all the little things we collect and the emotions we tuck away over time, ‘Box of Me’ is a simultaneously personal and universal album, which will appeal to listeners across genres, of any age.
Ably assisted by a stellar cast of backing musicians, including Lana Del Rey on ‘Lover’s Fate’, this is a record that is far removed from the bedroom guitar strummers that litter the indie scene. It is mature, intelligent and accomplished music from a writer and performer who has put in the time to hone her craft. Alice has written and performed in the northeast for more than a decade, sharing stage with some great bands such as the Nields and Ween. She’s garnered recognition from several highly competitive song contests and been featured on both local and national radio. But it is with this album that Alice is set to make her mark.
Alice is currently also reveling in a release of another kind… the birth of her son, welcomed into the world this past May. Though she’ll be in the “baby trenches” for a stint, Alice is actively promoting her album and pursuing bookings for the fall.
