Hi! I'm Amy.
I first picked up a guitar about four years ago, when I was 38 years old and had two young kids. The makeshift band I helped found here in Austin, Texas, called The Cover Girls, went from moms-doing-it-for-fun to something much more serious. I discovered a love and a passion for music that I never knew I possessed, and I wanted to devote more time to writing, learning, and recording.
When our band diverged last year, I found myself on my own. So I wrote all new material with my husband and turned it into my first EP, Ghosts and Saints (recorded October 2013 at Matchbox Studios and released January 2014).
I called my producer, Dwight Baker, the day after I released that EP. I knew I had to get more real and more honest, and write everything myself. We scheduled the entire month of May 2014 to record a full album. I ended up writing and recording 15 new tracks. Doing that and developing the confidence I needed in order to do so has been a struggle, and yet extremely rewarding. Eleven of these tracks are now my new album FORWARD, which will be released September 30, 2014.
It was heavily influenced by guitar rock like Jack White, and a lot of nineties-era music, like Beck, Cake, Janet Jackson, TLC, Luscious Jackson, Madonna and more. We threw off the lines and just did what we felt, and that became the FORWARD album.
I changed my goals with this new work- I wanted every song to be worth it. I wanted to really grow, to really say something, and to be able to look back and be proud, and make my children proud. And I hope that when this year ends, I'll be able to say that I did just that.
