"You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try."
- Beverly Sills (American opera singer)
Most people wait for fate to happen, but this band is making it happen. The destiny of Matt Huber and Bethany Meeks brought them together to form a two-piece rock band whose sound encompasses both the simplicity of two voices and the complexity of beautiful, haunting music. Inspired by the idea of taking on fate and not just letting it pass them by, the duo named themselves Dialing Dalia, after the Lithuania goddess of fate and weaving, Dalia.
Dialing Dalia, having been only recently formed, is in the process of recording its first CD. Located in Jackson, Tennessee, in between Nashville and Memphis -- two of the world's most influential music cities --Dialing Dalia has influences from both places. With story-telling lyrics of folk/country and at its heart, the soul searching melodies of blues/soul, Dialing Dalia creates a new sound that cannot be categorized. Their sound has been described as a modern Civil Wars, with elements akin to Paramore, Muse, Foo Fighters, and Blink 182.
Matt Huber, a native of Switzerland, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, over ten years ago. Son of an opera singer and violinist and grandson of a celebrated Swiss composer, Matt was surrounded by music at an early age. Dragged to classical concerts, operas, and piano and voice lessons as a child, Matt knew he loved music, but wanted to go his own way and be very different from the classical musicians of his family. He gave up piano lessons and taught himself guitar. Playing guitar, bass, drums, and piano, Matt is the instrumentalist behind Dialing Dalia's music as well as sharing lead and background vocals with Bethany. Dialing Dalia's haunting melodies are, in part, created by the fact that Matt plays guitar left handed but with the strings strung right handed, thus allowing for unusual chords and guitar play. Since arriving in Nashville and graduating from Belmont University, Matt has played in a rock band, a jazz/rap band, and other projects, including his own solo works and runs his own recording studio.
Bethany Meeks, a native of Jackson, Tennessee, is a natural talent with a sweet and soulful voice. She is a recent graduate of the University of Tennessee Martin in broadcasting, where she was crowned "Miss UT Martin" and competed in the "Miss Tennessee Pageant," her success being partly due to her vocal abilities. She has been the host of "Nashville Spotlight" for three years along with being named a "Nashville Star," and has been working with Nashville grammy award winning producer, Brien Fisher. Bethany has made numerous television and radio appearances and has even worked as a DJ for a radio station. Not coming from a family of musicians, Bethany has had to pave her own way. Bethany brings to her writing and singing a touch of the modern Southern Belle, which comes through foremost as empathy for humanity and appreciation for beauty.
The pairing of this odd couple brings together a tension in their music that reveals a vulnerability and heartfeltness as well as a technical and melodic sound. The simple blending of voices and clean sound of Dialing Dalia also brings the listener an understanding that it was destiny that brought these two musicians together. Dialing Dalia is not just waiting for fate but is calling to it and making it happen.
