Gaelic Brew / Bio

Gaelic Brew are a three piece band, and this is what we are about! We are 3 lads who love to have a good laugh, and the best thing about that is it shines through when we play our gigs, and usually when we are having a good laugh our audience tend to also. Our roots and our basis are in Irish music both ballads and traditional, however we are not tied to these genres, we cover current, rock, pop, reggae and many more types of music. We know we have something for everybody.

We formed in the traditional way that most Irish bands form, for those of you that are not familiar with this tradition let us explain,

Late one night in a local public house from behind a pint of Guinness rose a rendition of the iconic Fureys song ” Sweet Sixteen”. Now keeping in tradition the pub was hushed into silence as the verse was lilted by none other than Gaelic Brew’s Evin O Riordan, now keeping in the politeness of this tradition it is acceptable to “join in” if you know the song, and from the other end of the bar Gaelic Brew’s Damien Coughlan fired up his vocal hatch and a sudden harmony began to fill through the pub. And by total accident and unknown to both of us at the time this was to be the start of a new band!

So that is how Evin and I met, but this is only the beginning of the story! We set up a band, and at the time were known as Something Simple. This was where we formed the basis of our music and familiarized ourselves with the trades of becoming a live band! I had some experience as I played with a session band once a week called Kick The Bucket, and Evin had some experience because he had an extensive cd collection and he saw a guy playing guitar once in Killarney! Armed with all this experience we were ready to take on the job!

Something Simple went on to become a liked and popular group, and it was when Frank Maguire joined in the fun, things really started to take off!

Now the story of how Frank joined the band is also true to the traditional Irish approach of forming a good band! Basically we new a guy that knew another guy that bought a dodgy car off of a guy that knew Frank and so we got his number and asked if he would be interested in joining, to which he happily accepted! Although, if you ask Frank how it happened he will probably tell you he got a call from Sony to join the next big band to come out of Ireland!!

Frank has a great knowledge of music and first started playing the live scene back when tight leather pants and a mullet were acceptable attire!

So we played as this formed 3 piece for a while under the name Something Simple and our list of contacts and venues began to grow, and we created an electric atmosphere wherever we played!

We recorded and engineered our first album which we titled “Craic n’ Ceol” this was a major achievement for us as we did the whole thing ourselves from scratch with our own recording equipment. We should probably mention that this album is available for sale by request. At present we are preparing to record our second album!

2012 has been a whirlwind year for us, on top of recording our first album we managed 3 mini tours in London, we met some great people and we established a small fan base and a number of contacts over there. We are looking forward to more tours around the U.K

It is at this point we should probably explain the new name “Gaelic Brew”.
It’s simple really, the name we had was already widely in use by a number of groups so we felt it would be better to make up a name unique to us. We felt “Gaelic Brew” suited us and what we are about!

Despite the light hearted biography we are a professional band and entertainment is our top priority. We hope you have enjoyed reading about us, and hope to get the chance to entertain you soon!
