Mark Raven is an indie alternative folk artist from Rancho Cucamonga, CA. He’s known for his melancholy, honest, vocally multi-layered work in the vein of Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, Bon Iver and John Vanderslice. Until 2011, he focused on doing more experimental work under various monikers, all the while, further honing his craft.
Raven’s new record, Dusk Tree, is a work of confessions, confessions of depression, difficult experiences, genuine regret and somehow surviving. It’s an act of bringing up the past in order to banish it, an act of unrelenting honesty spilling out till one runs out of pain to splash onto a canvas. In the end is an easing of burdens, finding great relief and rest with morning light streaming through.
Dusk Tree was written in a two month period where Raven allowed himself to do little else than delve into places he had not wanted to delve back into before. It’s all in a nine song barrage of rehashed memories, attaining redeeming beauty where there previously was none. It’s a world safely contained where it is given proper recognition as having been almost worth the trouble.
Dusk Tree will be out on June 25th.
