The Phantom Dream’s unique blend of rock ‘n’ roll is the result of a longtime creative partnership between guitarists Dylan Frey and Jonny Kistler. Their idea to start a band was originally formed in the summer of 2004, but wasn’t fully realized until the fall of 2011 when drummer Vinnie Ponterio responded to an ad on Craigslist. During the transitional 7 year stretch, front man Dylan Frey and guitarist Jonny Kistler flexed their artistic muscles, churning out album after album of original music and honing the bands hybrid rock style, all while creating a different sort of backbone to the music: a series of fiction novels (also titled The Phantom Dream) that provide the direction and focus of all the music and lyrics. Eventually, with the addition of Lace Hansen (Bass) and Vinnie, the band began playing small local shows and getting more experience on stage. After about a year of spending time in the local La Crosse music scene, the band was itching to take their sound to a higher level. Unfortunately, it was at this time that co-songwriter, Jonny Kistler, announced that he would be leaving the band for a higher paying job in a distant city, which in turn left The Phantom Dream’s future uncertain. This uncertainty, however, was short lived. Ironically, local hardcore outfit “A Dive to Depths Below”, a band that Dylan Frey had played with for a short of time, was beginning to dissolve. This left guitarist Jack Kistler (Jonny’s younger brother) and bassist Jimmy Hill looking for a new project, and the two eventually landed a spot in part of The Phantom Dream's lineup. Empowered by the tighter sound and increased dedication of the new lineup, the four-piece began to make a name for themselves by releasing a single, “Follow”, and more recently an EP, “Gadfly.”
