John Nowak began performing on trumpet and vocals at the age of seven and has been performing professionally for over 50 years. He grew up in a musical family. His mother was a professional singer and his father played trumpet in the big bands in the 30’s and 40’s and later became a music educator. Consequently, John was exposed to all musical genres. He was classically trained and learned to love everything from symphonic, choral and folk music to big band and small combo jazz.
Over the years, John has had the privilege of performing with many wonderful musicians, mostly in the small jazz combo arena. He has entertained on cruise ships as well as in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, and New York. Most recently, before moving to Bangor, Maine, he could be seen with the Unified Jazz Ensemble in the Baltimore/Washington area. He also has performed on several recordings both as a vocalist and trumpeter.
John’s passion, however, is music from “The Great American Song Book”. This includes songs composed in the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s and recorded by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, and Ella Fitzgerald. He feels this era produced some of the most beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics ever written, which are as popular today as they were when they were originally performed back in the day. Since he has moved to Maine, John has been performing these tunes with many of the best Jazz musicians in Maine. He released his latest recording “Once More With Feeling” on the Red Canoe label in early 2013.
