Brothers Trent David and Blake Christian combine classic rock-n-roll toughness with a raw emotional lyrical palette to create a unique sound that is both engaging and confrontational. City Water is a 10 year collaboration that has taken the brothers from playing hometown festivals and open mic nights to Trent playing the Athens bar circuit while in college. All provided the time, experience and desire to establish the band.
Born in Detroit and raised in Atlanta Trent and Blake share a wide variety of influences pulling together the northern grit and drive of a rock ballad with the southern soul of an acoustic blues song. “I have often described City Water as the integration of southern gothic literature with inner city poetics” says Trent Lanham. Born to a musical family, the brothers learned the power of well-crafted lyrics and chord structure from their jazz-trained mother and the fury of their father's Neil Young and Crazy Horse records. Other musical influences include MC5, Bob Seeger, Radiohead, White Stripes, Deerhunter, Ryan Adams and The Ramones.
City Water front man Trent David is a prolific songwriter, singer and guitar player who has the ability to take what’s stirring on the inside and make a musical Polaroid. Pulling out original songs like Can’t Forget That and Looking At Your Scars are perfect examples. He is completely at home hammering on his '58 Les Paul with Blake on drums or swamping it out on his vintage resonator.
Blake Christian is the diesel engine that consistently brings a rhythmic foundation and undertone to City Water’s vibe. He instinctively understands where Trent is headed and can knock out sounds and layers on a dime. Blake is clearly a heavy rock n roll drummer who can also lay down a funky jam-band rhythm when playing an acoustic set.
With a move to East Nashville in the Fall of 2012 City Water hit the studio to begin working on their first EP - Gin Mill Cowboys. Watch for their second EP release in Spring 2014.
