Ion Source is a progressive-rock band created in November 2006 after the reunion of three musicians Andrea Berardinelli – Bass, Marco Durpetti – Guitars and Paolo Lucci – Drums, who had played together in the band Phrenastenia, a progressive death-metal band active during the years 1997-2003. The Phrenastenia’s live performances during these years were very important for the centre Italy metal scene.
After exploring several musical genres (rock, hardcore, progressive metal, fusion..etc) with different band formations the three had the idea to compose and record instrumentals, free from any schemes or preconceived.
Ion Source was initially created as studio musical project and although the genre is not clearly defined, what it’s clear is the band's interest for the progressive sound of the 70’s mixed with todays contemporany sound, interlaced with improvised concepts that delivers the melody.
In 2009 the band released their first self-produced demo album in the month of June.
2010 is a year of many changes, the drummer Paolo Lucci leaves the band and Andrea Berardinelli and Marco Durpetti decide to completly change the band sound, the singer Giovanni Biagiola joins as the new voice.
Together they focus on creating a more structural sound keeping the band’s original characteristics. In 2013 the new sound is finally delivered through their first self-produced album “Colors” made up of eight songs with the drummer Marco Bianchella as special guest for the recording.
Ion Source is now creating a new line-up with the new drummer Luca Saja and with Giorgio Mariani on guitar and on keybords, to compose new songs that will be performed live during the presentation of the new album.
