For the past 5 years, the members of Lion Heights have been backing up reggae acts locally and throughout the country. Although they are young, they have over 30 combined years of experience playing and studying music. Dane Foltin, Jeremy Carlson, and James Campbell met while studying at Columbia College Chicago and continued to play together in various reggae groups around the city before hooking up with singer Zion.
In 2008, Foltin founded The Roots Rockers Club which Carlson and Campbell later joined. This group reached over 68,000 international viewers after being featured on the Bob Marley Facebook page (1). They also recorded an album which was released under their own DIY label- Dangerous Sound- entitled "Rise Up" (2).
Alongside their work with the RRC, members of Lion Heights have also backed up local artists such as Rasta Kelly (3) and Yabba Griffiths; the latter of which they backed for a 2 month tour across the northwest this past summer. With Yabba, the group recorded, mixed, and produced a live album which was also released on the same label (4).
Combined, the band has opened for and performed with international acts such as The Wailers, Sizzla, Gramps Morgan, Bushman, Steel Pulse, Big Youth, Ken Boothe, Yellowman, and Chaka Khan. Earlier this year in February, Foltin, Carlson, and Campbell had the opportunity to back Jamaican singer Dawn Penn under the name The Mixx (5).
Their hard-hitting reggae has touched Chicago venues such as Lincoln Hall, The Metro, The Shrine, Double Door, Evil Olive, Tonic Room, Elbo Room, Reggie's Rock Club, Kinetic Playground, Subterranean (residency), Wild Hare, Exedus II (residency), Cubby Bear, Underground Lounge, Stereo Nightclub, and has been heard at such Chicago festivals as the Festival of Life, the Taste of Latin America, Pilsen Music Fest, and Lincoln Park's Carbon Day Festival.
