I very much loved creating music. When I was younger I wrote and recorded hundreds of songs and played some of those songs in several bands locally. I had for a very, very long time completely stopped playing any instruments much less writing and recording anything. Occasionally I would play 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed or ladybugs picnic for my children but other than that my music life had come to an end, but I had a shameful secret need to play for an audience again.
A friend turned me onto YouTube by pointing me towards Jack Conte and his band Pomplamouse. They were making semi-low quality-ish music videos. I should clarify that they were using very expensive recording equipment and spending a lot of time using that equipment so really not so low-budget or low quality but they seemed to be untouched by the music industry. Anyhow, it did show me that with some audio equipment and a camera an audience may be out there that wanted lo-production music…an audience that wanted to witness the making of music without glamour or too many touchups. I only play music because I enjoy it and want others to enjoy what I have created. I eke out a living doing other things so I don’t have much audio/video equipment or (and more importantly) the time to produce even the lowest quality of project similar to what my hero Jack Conte has created. I still want an audience to give additional meaning and purpose to playing music again. I have no desire to live like I did in my twenties playing in pool halls and dive bars living out of a van (or a utility building we called the “love shack” before the B52’s did…hehe) again…I am now in my early 40’s with a wife and family. I don’t have a production budget to throw at my passion and disregard my responsibilities as a husband and father. Established artists and many of my inspirations are able to continue to make music well into their later years with no less effect (i.e. Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, AC/DC, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs) Needless to say my “rock star” days are long gone… but I still have that shameful secret need to play for an audience again.
So my approach isn’t glamorous, it isn’t well produced, or polished…it is me playing some songs for you as if you were sitting in the room with me (or several of me) recorded with basic maybe even primitive equipment with real life lighting and very little editing…and it costs you nothing now or ever.
So, I hope you like it…let me know either way.
