Since January 2013, a cluttered Columbia Heights basement has served as a musical melting pot where the vibrant chords and improvisational sensibilities of jazz mix with the energy and passion of rock, the smooth snaky grooves of soul, and the hard thumps of funk. In that basement, Newt Junior is preparing to unleash "Future Proof." This debut EP lives up to its name—both new and familiar, mreflecting classic influences that have been fused into a modern sound that Newt Junior is now ready to release upon the Washington, D.C. music scene.
Composed of D.C. music veterans Dave Ray (drums), Stephen Baker (keyboards) and Eric Belec (bass), plus New Jersey transplant Kate Stanley (vocals/guitar), Newt Junior represents years of performance experience spanning almost every conceivable genre. After playing together in various combinations as part of other projects over the past six years, the quartet formed their own band with the goal of combining all of their accumulated influences into one vision.
These influences come together in the tracks featured on the new EP, from the dreamy jazz ballad “Soul,” to the acoustic rocker “Stolen,” to the propulsive swing of “Time.” Newt Junior’s cover selections further show their versatility, spanning 90s rock, 70s soul, smooth bossa, contemporary pop, and alternative hip hop. Through top-notch musicianship and passion for their craft, Newt Junior unites these diverse styles into one cohesive genre that offers something every listener can enjoy.
Newt Junior is currently booking shows through 2014 and into 2015, and is aiming to release their debut EP "Future Proof" in that timeframe.
