Upsidedowntown is a 3 piece rock band from Edmonton Ab, Canada. Formed in April 2012 by long time friends and former band mates(The Smokers and Dethod) Aaron Formaniuk (guitar/lead vocals) and Jackson Vasicek (drums/backing vocals) started jamming and just having fun making music. Soon after Aaron and Jackson began playing together again Aaron suggested another longtime friend to play bass Tabetha Rae (bass/backing vocals) who had some experience in the past with guitar but never really played bass, luckily for us Tab is a natural and she picked it up super quick with guidance from Aaron and now she rocks it like a pro.
As a band you are constantly being ask by people who haven't yet had the chance to hear you "what type of music do you play?" or "who do you sound like?" and I always have such a hard time with this question because nowadays there are so many genres and sub-genres that its hard to know where you fit. I have no problem listing off bands and musicians that have definitely have a profound influence on us, but that doesn't mean that is what we sound like or are even trying to sound like, We like to classify ourselves as "Canadian Rock" which I'm not sure if that is an "official" genre but if you listen to a lot of Canadian bands/musicians (sloan, big wreck, tragically hip, big sugar, Neil young, yukon blonde, and so on) you will notice there is something that connects them all that you can't quite put your finger on but there is just something "Canadian" about their sound and we think thats where we fit. We are proud of being Canadian and you might notice in our music that we like to include parts of our country in our lyrics as a bit of an inside joke towards putting us on the map.
Music has always been a huge part of all of our lives and the passion to create and to perform runs deep in our heart. we don't make music because we have to we do it because we love too, it is what we do for fun. Energy in our jam space is always high and some days you will hear us laughing more so then you will hear us actually practicing because we get along so well and have really great chemistry as friends and as a band which just makes the whole thing work so well and I believe it really comes through in the music we play and our live stage presences. We don't take ourselves to seriously our number one goal is having fun but we do take great pride in our music, ideas and musicianship. Of course with any band/musician the ultimate outcome of all this would be to be able to make a living touring around preforming every night for packed venues but until then we are still having a blast just hanging out and jamming a couple nights a week and playing shows when we can. As a good friend and former bandmate Jeff Quinn once said "don't try and be a great band, just try and be a band".
Upsidedowntown's first 4 song EP entitled CAR just came out and is also available on iTunes as well as many other digital download sites.
