A classic Rock, Blues and Rhythm and Blues band out of St. Joseph, Mo.
Retrofit Bio and Press Release 3.14.14
What does Retrofit bring to the table?
“I think what sets us apart is the wide variety of music that we play,” says David Chesney. “We get good comments all the time on our eclectic set list that can go anywhere from Bill Wither’s Ain’t No Sunshine to Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion. A little Blues, some old school R&B and plenty of Classic Rock, we just enjoy variety, and we intentionally play a variety of music styles so that the next song doesn’t sound just like the last one. We like to rotate our set list too, so when you come see us again we’re not playing the same songs, or in the same order, and though we don’t play them all every night, our catalog is in the hundreds. We continue to learn and perform new material all the time.”
How long has the band been performing?
Jim DuBarr formed Retrofit in 2010. The current lineup has been together since the spring of 2012 with Jim, Bobby Combs, Mike Walter, and David Chesney.
Tell me more about the individuals in the band.
Jim DuBarr (Bass guitar and Vocals)… has been playing in various local groups for decades. Not only did he form Retrofit but has founded many other groups over the years. A big contributor of time and talent for the St. Joseph Music Foundation, Jim has hosted various open jams and enjoys helping develop new talent. Jim has also done a few recordings with internationally known artists (no name dropping allowed).
Bobby Combs (Drums)… has been playing the drums for nearly 20 years including his high school jazz band and drum line, and played in a few local groups before landing with Retrofit in Nov. 2011.
Mike Walter (Guitar and Vocals)… Mike began playing in bands in 1974, but dropped out in the early 90s to raise a family and because of the demands of a so-called “real job”. With a little prodding from a nephew he picked up his guitar again in 2009 and has never looked back. Mike and David were in a band together in the 80’s.
David Chesney (Guitar, Keys, and Vocals)… “Play guitar, get chicks.” That was the sign David saw at age 13. He dumped his saxophone and the middle school orchestra for a guitar a few days later. David played in a few local bands for about 12 years then stopped and started a family. After a ten year hiatus David started playing again in 1999, and left for the east coast in 2001. He landed a gig as a session musician for a major recording label in New York City and did a U.S. tour with a multi-platinum selling group in 2002 as a backing musician. He also toured the U.K., Germany, and The Netherlands with another group in 2003 before returning to St. Joseph.
Oh yeah, the sign? Yes it worked!
What are the band’s goals?
“The group has a simple philosophy. We enjoy putting smiles on faces and having fun. We’re a cover band. We’re not trying to find a record deal. We just want our guests to enjoy themselves, do a little dancing, a little head bobbing, and forget about the troubles of the world for awhile and re-live some fond memories.”
