James Stemple, Composer
James Stemple enjoys a prolific career composing music for film, television and other media, and applies his natural diversity of style to suit each project's unique requirements. Jim is comfortable working both domestically and internationally and has recorded with world-class musicians all over the globe including London, Rio de Janeiro, Sofia, Johannesburg, S.A. as well as numerous locations in the U.S.
Raised in Washington, D.C., Jim began his music career performing with local rock bands. He attended the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in Coral Gables on full scholarship and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree. Immediately following, he joined a nationwide tour with the orchestra of "A Chorus Line" which provided an excellent opportunity to immerse himself in the study of scores for film, classical music and jazz. Upon conclusion of the tour, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film scoring.
Shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, he was offered a teaching assistantship (again on full scholarship) at the University of Southern California and entered the Masters Program in Music Composition - receiving conservatory training in orchestration, counterpoint and composition. His first concert work "Sleeping Giant" won First Prize in a national media music competition and was awarded a premiere by the Denver Symphony Orchestra.
Fortunate to start his career when live orchestral recording was the rule rather than the exception, Jim was mentored by some of the best orchestral composers in the business. Yet at the same time he saw and embraced the advent of digital music technology and marries them both extensively in his work.
Today Jim works in his state-of-the-art ProTools powered composing and recording facility located on The Lot in West Hollywood (formerly known as the United Artists/Warner Bros. Hollywood lot.) He has an extensive and eclectic collection of musical instruments from all over the world that he employs for both traditional and completely unconventional uses.
He has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and to date has worked on over 20 films, scores of commercials and written hundreds of hours of music for television. He has been selected as a Sundance Composing Fellow, a Peer Judge for the Emmy Awards and Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival and has been featured in radio interviews, University lectures and has been featured in The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Jim creates unique and distinctive sonic fabrics that are colorful, imaginative and custom tailored to his client’s specific needs. His goal is to enhance and raise the client's project to a new level by crafting intriguing, one-of-a-kind musical solutions. In a digital age, he has found a way to stay true to his roots - and when it is appropriate, combine the best of both worlds by augmenting fundamentally rich and natural sound with cutting edge technology.
