James Forte is Cameron James Rutherford, born September 26, 1985, in Denver, Colorado.
He began music at the age of 4; after falling in love with his uncle's drumset, his mother helped him pursue music lessons. He trained in private lessons for piano and percussion until the age of 16, when he began to teach young children the lessons he had learned. He specialized in teaching kids to read musical notation.
He attended Northridge High School and spent most of his extracurricular time with every music program the school offered. He played in the drumline on several instruments, played with the pit orchestra for musical productions, and learned to play and write for several instruments. He studied, performed, and competed at the regional and state levels in percussion, and at the national level with concert band, orchestra, and symphony orchestra. For his "Senior Project" he arranged "The Matrix Reloaded" musician Rob Dougan's "Furious Angels". He taught it to the school's symphony orchestra and performed it live, in a production the likes of which the school had never seen, involving stage and light crew.
He moved on to Southern Utah University where he majored in music.
He joined the US Army in 2006 in pursuit of a career with the US Army Band, but was honorably released in 2007 due to PTSD.
In 2008 he began working towards excelling his musical career. He studied and learned how to use several different DAWs and other music production programs and began learning to make electronic music.
On September 3, 2010, he was struck by a car while longboarding. He was wearing Skullcandy clip-on, over-ear headphones while listening to music. The headphones acted as a helmet, and despite major injuries, saved his life. A life-changing event, he felt as though he had received a second chance at life, and made it his goal to help others through music with positive messages.
By the end of 2011 he had written is first full length symphony as Cameron James Rutherford. His goals involving music go further than EDM; he hopes to compose professional film scores in the future. He has worked as a producer, writer, and composer on independent films, and was nominated for Best Original Score at the Filmed In Utah awards of 2013.
After his accident he began working with other local musicians and joined two locally popular metal bands, but due to several reasons both bands broke up.
He had been seeking other musicians with which to work in projects (and still works with many musicians seeking him for collaboration), but decided to advance his career as a solo and collaboration act. His friends and family had nicknamed him "Skull-Cam-dy" following his accident, and it stuck. Knowing he could further his musical career with solo work and production, he began "SkullCaMdy" in November, 2012. He began production of an EP "2nd Chance", but due to financial issues and no real interest from labels with this music, he strived to change and improve his music. After meeting with a the president of a Utah-based record label (Refinement Records) in September (2013) they felt interested enough to work with him and assigned an artist development agent to help him hone all areas of his craft. At strong recommendation from the label to change his name from SkullCaMdy to something more marketable, he changed his stage name to James Forte, James being his middle name, and forte being the musical word for loud.
He is currently working on an EP that will be released soon.
