Hello, my name is Josh Allen: singer, songwriter and guitarist. I’m supposed to write this biography to promote our new band, The Mazatzals, and our new album. I’m going to try to get through this without sounding pompous because maybe some of you will find our lives interesting without hating us. Well here it goes.
I can start you guys out with some of our background. Jimmy Ruehlman, our bassist, and I have been playing together since junior high in North Bend Ohio close to Cincinnati and have had multiple bands with different members. We’ve always had this special connection and we were always who stuck together. We went through blues phases and jazz phases but it’s ultimately what formed who we are as musicians today. After high school we parted ways due to me attending Berklee College of music in Boston, Massachusetts. I was quick to find out that it was not the life I had wanted, and spending endless amounts of money wouldn’t bring me the music or the career I wanted to create. After months of living in the city I found what drove me as a person. Walking in the woods, long talks with great friends, bonfires and quiet late nights with just a songbook in hand was what I wanted. It’s what meant the most to me and ultimately led me to the style of music I was writing. With artists like Fleet Foxes, John Denver, Avett Brothers and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros playing around in my head I was heavily influenced. Upon coming back I started some solo work on my Last EP Cultured which was recorded in the basement of my great friend Louis Salamone. I loved the songs and their meaning to me but what was missing was the space of having others with me. Harmonies that would fill an empty cathedral, lyrics to relax and let you think of the ones you love and what matters the most in life, the constant battle of who you are, who you want to be and where you will end up. That’s what you will find in our music. It was time to start a group. I met up with Jimmy in October of 2013 and was joined by drummer Joe Bedel. I was immediately amazed with the skill Joe brought to the table and the connection was made while we spent the night just playing together. Joe is a Music Education major at Northern Kentucky University and it’s evident how much of a professional he is after working with him. Now with a three piece we had started writing together and had already recorded the first part of our new album. All three of us have wanted more, more people involved and a bigger sound. Trevor Jordan joined us in November of 2013 with a fantastic voice that blends so well with Jimmy’s and my own. Trevor and I had met by chance by being random roommates in our apartment and really kicked it off from there. Now with a four piece band we are still looking to expand and write meaningful music for the simple listener who just wants to relax and think. Maybe this will all lead somewhere, and maybe it won’t, but as long as we’re playing music together I will let whatever happens, happen. I hope that was intriguing enough for you all but we’re just trying to find our place and laugh as much as we can together because that’s what really matters.
