The Dirtboxwailers was an idea that I always thought I would get to somewhere down the road as a side project or something like that, but at some point you stop straining your eyes to look into the future and focus on where you’re standing at the moment. This group of musicians have been plenty busy over the years in various bands. Here’s a little bit about these wonderful musicians….
Sammy Matthews - guitar/vocals
Sam has been a singer, songwriter, guitarist in everything from the Hair Bands in the 80′s and Blues bands in the 90′s playing through out Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. He had the fortune to study guitar and voice at the National Guitar Workshop in the early 90′s, and recently a few classes at the Austin Guitar School and O’Flaherty’s Irish Music Retreat. For the last several years has studied some Byzantine style chant singing in the choir of a local Orthodox Church. His musical influences vary from B.B. Freddie, and Albert [The three Kings] Ian Moore, Doyle Bramhall ll and Warren Haynes, to Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, and Loreena McKennitt. Blending a bit of it all together with J.R.T, Boyd and John to create some new and exciting D.B.W. music to share with the world……
Johnny Sea - bass/vocals
Johnny Sea took his stage name from a comment made on the John Hartford album Aero-Plane about a 1950’s country artist. The self taught bassist, guitarist and singer was an avid devotee of jazz fusion and latin rhythms before picking up the bass to play with friends at Oklahoma State University. He then got his performance feet wet in the 1980s playing in the locally popular rock band Streetside based in Stillwater, OK. Streetside played music by Heart, Missing Persons and Pat Benatar with singers Victoria Stagi and Karen Rogers at many venues across Oklahoma and Kansas.
Johnny turned his attention toward learning the six string and singing songs from the early days of FM radio. Johnny spent time in Dallas and Austin, TX mixing with local players at open mic nights while developing his unique musical style.
Recording in 1996 with Houston songwriter John Hutchings as a bassist and guitarist, Johnny’s work was posted for distribution worldwide on the newly developed mp3.com website for songwriters under the groupBlackberry Pie. He then focused his efforts into developing a vocal repertoire that was played on a “State Highway 51 Tour” in 2002 with the Stillwater group Soul Gypsy playing towns along that Oklahoma road.
Johnny has performed recently in the Tulsa musical groups T-Town Radio Show and Lisa E and Mista B and Friends for numerous local organizations and at community events including: The United Way, The Heller Theater of Tulsa, and Mayfest of Tulsa in 2010 & 2011.
Boyd Murphy - drums
Boyd took on the love for drums after his parents bought him his first kit in the mid 80′s.Over the years he has been fortunate to play with many great local musicians.Plus being “the sound guy” for several local bands. But Boyd’s love for the blues brings that strong foundation and heartbeat to the DirtboxWailers..
Jimmy Ray Taylor - guitar/vocals
Jimmy is a self taught musician playing in bands in the 80′s and early 90′s in Oklahoma and Texas, Taking some time off to hone his writing, singing and guitar skills, now back on the scene with his soulful voice and tasteful guitar licks, Jimmy has reemerged to front The DirtboxWailers with some new and exciting music that has a groove all its own.
