Formed in early 2012, in the Northeast corner of Arkansas. Brad Messer & The Refuge are simply a group of guys who got together as a fun project but through songwriting and the natural friendships that have evolved, after careful consideration, decided to take things more seriously to get their music heard. They have recently wrapped up production on the first full album, as well as a professional music video for the local hit "Bartender". The band's general direction is derived from a heavy country/rockabilly/blues/Red Dirt influence and the majority of the songwriting is done by lead singer Brad Messer although throughout the years Jason Stowe and his family have been a vital part of the process, generating ideas and introducing different styles.
Jason and Brad have teamed up to form a solid co-writing duo on several unreleased material as well as songs on the current release. Jason is currently in another very popular band in the area so his time has been limited recently but the content more than likely would not have been the same, if even released if not for his vast knowledge of not only the instruments of bass and lead guitar, but also the ability to produce and mix many of the tracks heard on the debut. Jason brings to the table his influence of not only classic rock but standard to modern country. As Brad says "just put an instrument in his hands and he'll play the damn thing before the night is over, even if he's never played it before". Jason and his wife Crystal have two sons, both of which were original members of The Refuge and are all extended family of Brad's
Nick Rose was introduced to the band only a few weeks after the original members were formed and to hear Brad tell the story is quite the treat. "He just sorta fit in with everybody and then we could get the SOB to leave!" Brad says with a contagious laugh. Over the past year Nick has proved to be not only an irreplaceable asset in musicianship, but also contributing with his songwriting talent on tracks such as "Friend of Ours" as well as unreleased material. Nick provides much of the blues influence that is heard throughout the Delta on the harmonica, but also his country roots come out on harmonious melodies on tracks like "Let Go". Both Nick and Brad will perform a duo acoustical act several times a month that is not only a stellar performance but a chance to do something they love with a fellow best friend.
The band is led by Brad Messer on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Originally from Paragould, Arkansas, Brad is well versed in travels having lived and played music for a year most recently in Atlanta, Georgia as well as Nashville Tennessee. Brad wrote most of the first album between the two towns and decided to move back to his hometown to form The Refuge as well as sell of most possessions to afford the time and equipment necessary to record what he calls his "I just got something to say" style of music. Heavy influences of his are Randy Rogers Band, Elvis Presley, Wade Bowen, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Johnny Cash, and Stoney LaRue.
