Stephan, Aka “SurfRapSteph” Leader of the “Surf Rap Movement” is a half Colombian half French Artist/Entrepreneur/Surfer/Rapper and Songwriter born on the white sandy beaches of Miami FL. Growing up with three older brothers who are Hip Hop fanatics, Stephan was constantly acquainted to the sounds of instrumental melodic beats by Dj Premier, Pete Rock, and heavily exposed to the lyrical wordplay of Rakim, Nas, Talib Kweli, Jadakiss and many of the other “Greats” as well. Living by the beach, Stephan developed an incredible infatuation for the Ocean. By age 10, he was given a surfboard in return for reading a book. From then on, riding waves became his primary outlet. While other kids were playing Basketball or Soccer, Steph was either riding waves or memorizing lyrics from his favorite songs and reciting them to himself consistently: in the shower, on the way to school, or out Surfing. But, he never thought of writing his own rhymes. By age 18, it became aware that Stephan would have to have spinal Chord Surgery performed on his back due to his severe condition, “Scoliosis” and was not going to be able to surf for a year. Little did he know, this would not only be a major turning point in his life, but would result to what he would months later inspire him to start rhyming his life Away. During his recuperation, he was bed ridden for a month and aside from his family helping him get by , his oldest friend “Hip Hop” kept him sane. Immobilized listening to so much music, it reached a point where his mind began overflowing with lyrics and rhymes, until he began to rap about his two biggest passions: Surf and Rap. Hence, SurfRap.
Break Down "SurfRap"
"”SurfRap” is a culture, mentality, entity, genre of music and ultimately a global Movement unifying Surfers coast to coast with Hip Hop heads and music lovers all around the world. But MOST of all, these two words entirely represent the root of his expression. The Main artists responsible for influencing him are Nasir Jones (NAS) Pharrell Williams, Al Green, Jack Johnson, and Jim Morrison of “the Doors” The actual SurfRaP Music itself is influenced by an array of musical genres like Hip Hop, Reggae, Jazz, Funk, Pop, and Rock. He has a saying “ I ride these tracks like I rides my waves” this line represents how he applies the same rhythm when he rides a beat of a song as to when he rides a wave when he surf. He learned that it really all comes down to rhythm. “Every day is like a new wave…they're never the same.” It’s up to you to choose what your going do on that day or on that wave and how your going to ride it out. “Cruise the waves of Life”. In other words do your best to maintain rhythm and go with the flow with everyday events and situations, negative or positive. Ultimately it’s a mindset that everyone can use on a universal level.
Come along and Cruise….
