Roughkast is a rock and roll duo that currently resides in Houston, Texas. The two members of the band grew up on opposite sides of the world; Joey Campanello grew up in the frigid rain of South Yorkshire, England, while Nick Calderara grew up in the tropical paradise of Hawaii. Joey picked up guitar a couple of years ago and, deciding he liked it, made it his life’s goal to be a musician. Nick has been playing drums for most of his life and when asked to be in a rock band he was sort of like ‘yeah, sure’.
Though growing up in completely different parts of the world, they both obtained a love for rock and roll passed down by their respective fathers. As such their music mixes old school with new, never afraid to take on many different sub-genres under the wide umbrella that is rock and roll. Being a duo that tries to sound like a quartet, they hope that if they play loud enough then no one will really notice that they don’t, at the very least, have a bass player.
Their concerts have been described as ‘Fun and high energy’ (Joey) and ‘They’re okay, I guess’ (Nick). They have been noted to say that they will play music for you ‘so hard’. It is something of a band motto. The duo indeed play hard and as such their live shows are as much fun to watch as they are to listen to.
They hit the ground running as soon as they formed the band in January of 2013, playing at Lone Star College, Fitzgerald’s and twice at Hard Rock Café as local finalists in Hard Rock Rising Battle of the Bands. They recently released their debut album ‘Start a Ruckus’ which they are very excited about sharing with the world.
