Derek J.O is a remarkably unique one-man band, who blends multiple sounds to express his identity through music.
Derek’s musical journey began at a young age, while attending a performance in elementary school featuring two local beatboxers. Using solely their mouths, these artists were able to create drum beats, rhythms, and various other musical sounds. Amazed and inspired by the talent of these artists, he began exploring and experimenting with beatboxing, creating melodies by humming and adding percussive beats with his mouth. Derek not only found it to be self-entertaining, but realized it entertained those around him. He continued to develop his beatboxing techniques throughout high school and tried out as a lead singer in various bands, to expand and progress his musical zeal. It wasn’t until his move to Norfolk, Virginia from Southern California, that his interest in making music for himself began to evolve. As a lead singer in several garage bands Derek desired to expand beyond just writing lyrics and singing, but to undertake training on musical instruments, in order to interpret musically what was occurring in his head. He began taking private guitar and piano lessons, increasing his musical ear and improving his comprehension of the fundamentals of music. This in turn, and with time, gave place to the emergence of Derek’s distinctive sound. Derek J.O eventually branched out from lead singer to solo artist. Moving to Philadelphia, PA in 2010 to advance his music calling, he completed his E.P. “Into the Ever Screaming Lights”, and had it released on Itunes early 2012. Following his first E.P. came his first single “In Secret”, which was released mid-2012. Now living in the Pittsburgh area, Derek J.O continues as a one-man-band, manipulating multiple instruments through the application of sequencers, loop-pedals, and drum machines to attain his distinctive sound. Performing locally as well as out of the Pittsburgh area, there is growing interest in his music.
