Benny Cannon And Friends is an interesting makeup. A group of friends from different walks of life, coming together to make those groovin sounds that make you feel all warm and Fuzzy inside. Founded in Gainesville, Florida by Benny Cannon, It's everything that is good about music. It is nearly impossible to put a "genre" to this group because each member has a very different musical taste that is fused into each song. With the ability to entertain you for hours on end with original music, if you hear us once, you'll be sucked into our world and before you know it, you'll be one of our "Friends".
The Group came together in January 2011. It Began with Just Rocco Yeingst playing assorted Percussion and Benny Cannon Playing Guitar and Singing Original tunes as well as a few covers that they infused with what can called the "BCF" Style. Before long, Chris Brown came into the fold, bringing with him the smooth and sexy sounds that only a saxophone player can bring. This opened the gates for what would become "Benny Cannon and Friends". The idea being that with each member having so many friends within the musical community throughout the City and State, Why not have some of our "Friends" join us wherever we happen to be playing that night, Creating a vibe on stage that can only come from people who are truly friends making music together, and not just a bunch of good musicians on stage.
In January 2012, Benny stumbled upon Gainesville Open Mic Night "Done Right" Run by Randy Lee Holt at Loosey's Pub in Downtown Gainesville. This is where Benny Cannon and Friends would truly explode into the group/idea that it is today. A truly open and welcoming open mic environment with a great crowd where all musical tastes and talent levels were welcomed. With a 15 minute set per performer, The Group began to put together "mini-shows" to try and encompass their sound in the short time every Thursday. Leading up to the first "Benny Cannon and Friends" Show as part of the Open Mic Performers Showcase, an Idea crafted by Randy Lee Holt as a way to get some of the open-mic performers a little more exposure and an oppurtunity to play a longer set. The evening Featured Patrick Oberlin hopping in on a Purple (yes purple) Trombone. The night was a success and Benny, Chris, and Rocco knew this group had something very special brewing. Loosey's Open Mic is also where Benny Cannon and Beach Brooks met. Brooks, a master of his craft, walked in one night and lit the house up with his skills and musicianship on his guitar. Benny and Beach watched each other quietly for weeks before eventually "reading each others minds" and saying, "maybe we should play together." One more Friend on board. As members of the UF Jazz ensemble, Benny and Beach were connected to many great instrumentalists at the school. Two in particular who stood out were Clifford Gilmore and Jason Bontrager. Both experts at their instruments and had that drive to play music for no other reason than the pure love of playing good music for people to groove to. They would join in and a musical supergroup was complete. The Group played weekly at Loosey's while building up Buzz about them and eventually put together over 2 hours of original music to play for the masses. Clifford Gilmore had to part ways with the group due to personal reasons in february 2013. Adam Palpant stepped in to carry the torch on trumpet in February 2013. Benny, Rocco, Chris, and Adam met as Bandmates in the Santa Fe College Big Band Jazz Ensemble. Benny, Chris, and Rocco had been trying to get Adam to join the group since the inception of the group and with a simple "Hey Adam, wanna come play trumpet with us?" the band finally reached that feeling of musical brotherhood that they were seeking. They Have hit the ground running with 2-4 shows each month in the north-central florida area and are looking to tour and play festivals.
In a nutshell, we're here to make friends, have fun, and make beautiful music for everyone to groove to.
