Bio

The Johnny Griffin classic “Chicago Calling” can also be considered a reference to the suburbs of the Windy City. Skokie, IL native, John Temmerman, influences include tenor titans like Chicago’s Eddie Harris, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and mutlti-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. His third recording “Live in Evanston – John’s Mixed Bag captures his band in live quartet and quintet performances from 2007 and 2008.

About

Seven years after his warmly received initial CD, John Temmerman and his Jazz Quartet are readying a live CD release. Clocking in at over 73 minutes "Live in Evanston - John's Mixed Bag", the project's working title, is an audio memoir of two great sets, in June of 2007 and 2008, at the annual Custer's Last Stand Festival of the Arts held in Evanston, IL.

John is heard on tenor and soprano sax. Joined by Neal Alger on guitar, Steven Hashimoto on bass, Rusty Jones(2007) and Steve Magnone(2008) on drums, the quartet, with special guest Steve Thomas playing trumpet on two cuts, weaves its way through an eclectic mix of originals and covers.

Highlights include John's original blues, Sooner or Later and John's rollicking version of the hymn, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, featuring an A Capella opening tenor sax chorus.

Reviews are flowing in: John's Mixed Bag will be an unequivocable delight!

John continues to perform regularly throughout the Chicago area and privately teaches more than 20 saxophone and clarinet students weekly, ranging in age from primary school to adult The following bio was penned after John's initial CD, The Power of Two

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

John Temmerman is a performer (primarily tenor sax), bandleader, composer and music teacher based in the Chicago area. Initially eschewing music for a business career after stints in the University of Illinois Jazz Bands and at Berklee School of Music, he took up his instruments again in the early 90's. He then blossomed  under the tutelage of Mark Colby at DePaul University. The result was steady progress leading to roles as a performer/leader in area festivals and nightclubs and as a private music teacher. In 1995 he released a warmly received initial recording, Jazz Obsession Music, featuring John with a drummerless trio of sax, guitar and bass. His latest recording, The Power of Two, shows expansion in many ways. He is joined by his regulars: stalwarts Rusty Jones, drums and Steven Hashimoto, bass along with young lion Neal Alger on guitar. Together they explore a wide musical range including mainstream jazz, fusion, funk and swing during a 67-minute voyage.  John's direct, organized, yet expressive solos are a delight, as are those of his counterparts. Another highlight is the interaction between the extremely tight rhythm section. There are 12 cuts on this CD. Temmerman composed six; the remainder include the standards, All Blues and Nice and Easy, along with lesser known tunes recorded by the Crusaders, Tom Scott and the LA Express, Mark Colby and one tune, Costa Del Sol, from his son's Playstation game, Final Fantasy VII. This release has been warmly reviewed, with widespread domestic and international airplay.
