Indie folk ensemble Even the Animals was formed in the winter of 2013 upon the release of their first self-titled EP by founding members Jeff Markham and Peter Van Rijssen.
The group has been accompanied by a number of talented WNC musicians including Kent Spillman, Danni Iosello, Will Hogancamp, Jon Darconte, and Ian Riddell; all of which have been present during various studio sessions and live performances.
Even the Animals blends dusky Americana with softly gritty indie rock, songs in soft focus, close to the microphone and transcending the standard take on contemporary and traditional folk. The songs are lyrically driven with both Markham and Van Rijssen sharing harmonies and structure creating a bittersweet atmosphere that is both wistful and cacophonous; which may be the cause of their particular recording style.
Studio albums are tracked as live takes with all members performing simultaneously, adding the element of live sound with real people performing real music and possible mistakes where nothing is held back.
Even the Animals is a band that requires your attention and the listeners ear. Some bands will throw themselves on the ground in front of you and vie for your attention, but Even the Animals will not. Instead, they will captivate you, draw you close and tell you everything you are willing to hear.
