| BIO |
The members of Tea Cup Gin share a passion for great American music from the early 20th century made famous by composers, lyricists, and performers such as Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday, Johnny Mercer, and a host of early blues artists. We are focused on creating original material that draws from a variety of genres, including vintage jazz standards, torch songs, ragtime, delta slide blues, tin pan alley classics, chanson, cabaret, and show tunes-- coupled with our own brand of edgy and emotive lyrics.
Christy Benson delivers passionate vocals as lovely as a nightingale’s song, or with the grit of a delta blues artist. A strong rhythm section with Nigel Clarke on upright bass and Tim McElroy on percussion compliments the unique interplay of guitarists Mike Reid and John Klonowski, creating a unusual approach to the great American jazz tradition.
We hope to post demo recordings or videos of some of our new original material soon. In the meantime, come catch us live at one of our upcoming shows!
| NAME |
Why "Tea Cup Gin"? During prohibition, speakeasies often served bootleg gin from ordinary tea cups to hide what was inside. Although our original songs may look innocent enough on the outside, they contain a deliciously intoxicating mixture of musical influences. "Tea Cup Gin" evokes vintage jazz, and is catchier than saying "you can't judge a book by its cover."
