"Quite simply, Bitto is a Renaissance Man of vocals, a jack-of-all-moods, you might say. From first track to last on his album with drummer Jesse Gimbel, Air And My Sleep, Bitto switches constantly and effortlessly from a soft, near whisper to a powerful shout, before retreating back into a passionate warble. Such a truly textural range is the focal point of this otherwise very calm, smooth indie record." -Vinyl Mag (Air and My Sleep Review 5/21/2013)
September Call-Up's music is thoughtful, creative and genuine. While primarily the vehicle of singer-songwriter Christian Bitto, September Call-Up really began to take shape with the collaboration between Bitto and recording engineer/multi-instrumentalist Jesse Gimbel while working on Bitto's debut, "The September Call-Up EP" in 2012. With Gimbel joining on as a part of Bitto's band in promotion of the EP, the September Call-Up moniker was adopted. The EP garnered favorable reviews from fans and critics being labeled as "honest and organic" and touching on subjects like alcoholism, self expectations, and a longing for home.
With 2013's full-length debut album "Air And My Sleep", the low-key instrumentation of Bitto's debut EP has grown into a fully realized full-band sound with layers of electric and acoustic guitars, varied and original percussion, occasional organs and even crickets. Recorded in Gimbel's home studio, the album touches on themes of relationships, loss, love, and critiques on ones self and society as a whole. The album has tracks that range from quiet fingerpicked tales to folky ballads to dynamic songs that explode into full fledged indie rock all the while maintaining the lyrical earnestness and honesty that defines Bitto's music.
"The emotional, unsettled lyrics gave great counter to the restful acoustic guitar. The hushed tone was a risk, easily taken on the Sofar Sounds crowd. Christian has it down knowing how to draw you in; similar to the first time you'd hear the whispers of Sam Beam vocals on early Iron & Wine. " - Dan McGurk, Root Down in the Shadow
