The UnXpected is made up of young musicians who found each other at The Academy of Rock Music in Newport News, VA. Band members include: 17 year-old Cole Layman (guitar, vocals); 15 year-old Zachary Salsberry (guitar, vocals); 14 year-old Logan Layman (vocals, bass) and 19 year old Nick Weber (drums). Their love and passion for blues music is what drives them. From Willie Dixon to Janis Joplin; B.B. King to Joe Bonamassa -- these kids love the blues. And, if you've never seem them play, they'll surprise you when they change the pace with some good old classic rock tunes.
In January 2013, they released their first extended play CD self-titled, "The UnXpected", which included two covers and two originals -- "Daughter of Blues" and "Little Boy Blue". In December 2014, they released a second EP entitled "The UnXpected: Uncovered". Their latest work another original in "Don't Even Try" in addition to four covers including Jimi Hendrix's classic "Voodoo Child" and Joe Bonamassa's crowd-pleasing "Slow Train".
Their musical journey began in the Spring of 2012. Since then, they have made quite a splash on the local music scene. After just a few short months together, they took home the top prize in a Junior Battle of the Bands contest in Virginia Beach, VA while competing against some incredible young talent. Since then, they have played at the Norva, Kings Dominion Theme Park and major regional festivals such as the DC Blues Festival at the historic Carter Barron Amphitheater and the Park Fest Blues Festival in Richmond, VA. Other notable performance venues and festivals include Beach Street USA, Stockley Gardens Art Festival, Neptune Festival, Hampton Bay Days, James River Fest, Sunset on the James, Harvest Festival, The Broadberry and the Capital Ale House. In January 2013, they were honored to travel to Memphis, TN to represent the DC Blues Society at the largest blues festival in the world -- the International Blues Challenge -- and most recently were named "Best Teen Band" at VEER Magazine's Local Music Awards held at the Norva in February 2014.
