What It Is! / Bio

What It Is! is an original Funk/Soul Organ Trio. The bands sound is rooted in the deep funk of the late 60's Soul and Funk movement but with a fresh young attitude born of newer bands like Soulive and Galactic. What It Is! was formed when Salt Lake Based blues/rock mainstay Shades Of Gray decided to call it quits after 9 years together. Adam Fifield (Hammond Organ, Wurlitzer, Clavinet, Bass Keys) and Mat Wennergren (Guitar) decided to start the trio after discovering a mutual love for the old 60's soul trio sound. Drummer Eric Stoye was quickly added to the mix and What It Is! was born. Debuting a mere hour after Shades Of Gray's last show What It Is! immediately proved they had the chops to make a room move. The band has the ability to fill a dance floor with a sound that sounds like 4 people but is only three thanks to Fifield's incredible left hand bass skills. Simultaneously rocking a hammond organ line with the right and a funky bass line with the left is no easy feat but Fifield makes it look easy. Combined with Mat's blues/soul guitar playing and Eric's creative and funky drumming, What It Is! will make you move even if you don't plan on it. What it is! truly is What it is.
