The story behind Controversy & Big D
Born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., brothers Reginald Dowdell better known as Controversy and Darius Dowdell or Big D began collaborating skills in 2008. Having had an argumentative personality, Reginald established his name after a high school classmate stated “your mama should’ve named you Controversy!” Unable to grow out of the coined childhood nickname Big D, Darius decided to place it to use as his stage name. It was only natural that the brothers were drawn to focusing their talents in the hip-hop industry after growing up having a way with words and rhyming.
“I feel like rap is losing its true substance and people focus more on the beats as opposed to the actual substance of the song,” said Controversy.
The brothers plan to separate themselves from other artists by remaining consistent and creating significant songs over enjoyable beats. Influenced by artists like Kanye West, Wale, and J. Cole the duo describes their music to be soothing, fun, sexy, and mind provoking. Controversy & Big D describe their music as crossing over into all genres, so that it is not limited to one particular category.
“Our music style is like no other in the industry,” stated Big D.
The two plan to tour over the next couple of years so that their music is widespread, as well as potentially able to land them a legitimate record deal. Fueled by family, fans, and loved ones Controversy & Big D remain motivated daily from the supported faith in their talents.
