Chris Whicker, Born and raised in the mountains of Eastern Ky from the small town of Martin. My interest in percussion began at a very early stage in life. At nine years old, I was imitating my idols, John Bonham, Buddy Rich and Steve Smith by playing on drum sets he made out of containers and coffee tins. At the age of 11 I started playing my first real drum in grade school. When I started playing I found that it came very easy to me naturally. What most of my friends struggled with, I found to be very easy and picked up very quickly. I never had any real formal lessons but I didn't shine away from asking other experienced drummers to teach me what they knew.
At the age of fifteen, I was asked by my uncle to play in a family band known as "Mistaken Identity". We played mostly small time stuff, proms, dances special events and the occasional small town honky tonk. I wasn't the drummer at first, I played Latin Percussion for a few years and sang back up with a few solo songs along the way while learning more about playing a full drum set. While with this band, my uncle bought a bar in Eastern Ky called the "Green Door" while playing as the house band I had the privilege of Opening up for a few major bands you may have heard of, "Goose Creek Symphony, The Kentucky Head Hunters . Hank Williams Jr and The Bama Band, and Exile.
On graduating high school in 1993. I enlisted into the Army and I continued to play in bands as I could.I even auditioned for the Army band while I was stationed at Camp Casey Korea on snare drum. I made the band but was unable to keep the spot due to my duties in the Army. In 1998 I completed my time in the Army and moved back to Floyd Co KY. On arriving home, I immediately got back into the music scene as fast as I could, I played in a few locally known bands, "Country Persuasion" and Triple Threat" I also made a run at Nashville playing in what ever band was in need, hoping that I would be noticed but as I soon realized, Just like Aldean says "Its a crazy town full of neon dreams, everybody plays, everybody sings"
After about a year, I decided to move to Richmond KY in 2002. Frustrated with my failed success. I felt like it was time to take an extended break on focus on college and a career other than music. In 2011 with the support from my girlfriend now wife along with friends and family, I decided to start playing again. After diving back in, I became very active once again. I started doing session work, and fill in for other artists. After starting back over with my music career I found myself in love with it once again.
I am endorsed by The Kelly Shu Company and Cympad and Pork Pie Percussion and Gorilla Ears in ear monitors. I also have several local business that support me and my bands. I've always considered myself a professional player with a professional attitude and dedication to the music.
As a drummer I enjoy playing rock, blues and southern rock the most. Ive always liked banging out the big moster beats and heavy grooves. Like most musicians in my area I play what keeps me busy and paid!!
