Chad Mason is a true urban cowboy with a heart of gold and steel, wielding a hefty gift for song rather than a weather-beaten Winchester.
After an extended run with Australian outlaw-country rockers Wagons, including a win for Album of the Year at The Age EG Awards (2011) & the AIR Award for Best Country Album (2011), Chad has settled in Nashville to focus on his songwriting roots. A well respected songwriter, as well as guitarist, Chad returns with a songbook of new melodies ready to offer up raw, open and reflective truths.
Mason was the founder of Sydney’s original Americana darlings, The Smoking Muskets. The band released their self-titled debut album, The Smoking Muskets in 2007 to warm reviews. The 5 track EP helped The Smoking Muskets build a steady fan base in Sydney before it’s separation in early 2008, with sold out shows and lead to Mason’s first introduction to the members of Wagons.
Mason followed up the split of The Smoking Muskets with a quick return to his solo work, releasing his first self-titled acoustic EP (Chad Mason, 2008) shortly before being recruited for duty as Wagons lead guitarist.
Mason happily fit into his sideman role touring the globe, winning countless hearts & minds for the Wagons cause.
A short promotional CD (Tremont Nail Co. Promo) containing “The War” & “Crossfire”, was released, with encouragement from Wagons’ band mates, before Mason existed Wagons to make the move to Nashville. It wasn’t until 2012 that Mason released his next (III, 2013). Originally released as an Australian tour short run, the 300 acoustic EPs sold out within days. A tour support for the esteemed Old Crow Medicine Show then followed.
Mason’s most recent release (The Aviary Session, 2014) is an interesting step considering today’s digital listening climate. After playing on an Upstairs At United Session at United Record Pressing in Nashville, Mason decided that a live/analog/vinyl was the direction he would take.
The Aviary Session captures Mason & his band raw, simple & honest.
Released as a 7” Vinyl double-A-sided single, Baby Come Back is a rollicking second-line blues that raises issues of trust & lust, whilst with Wish You Weren’t Gone, Mason crafts a scene of self inflicted regret & loss cast over a heartbreaking Memphis homage.
