Julian was born in Detroit MI, after moving to Paris, France at the age of 10 he picked the guitar and started learning to play the blues from expatriated Black American players in Paris. After a stint in the US Army he joined an English band moved to London and played throughout the UK and Europe. He now lives in Maryland and has his own band, The Julian Russell Group.
