Adam Lane began writing songs on acoustic guitar while studying in Oxford, England during the summer of 1995. Once back in Chapel Hill, NC, he quickly recorded Six from the Ground Up, a six song EP Cassette recorded under the moniker The Casey Andrews Project. In the late ‘90s, Adam played acoustic shows in the Chapel Hill area, as well as Zakk’s Coffeehouse in Murfreesboro, NC, and Swampfest in his home town of Gatesville, NC. Adam played Swampfest annually from 1995 to 1999, the last three with his friend, musician Jeff Mullins, who often accompanied Adam on acoustic lead guitar and backing vocals.

Adam’s first band experience was as a drummer. He played drums toward the end of high school in his hometown of Gates County, NC, with The Cagebirds and later in college for Gates County alternative band Fathm.

After living in Charlotte for a few years, Adam moved back to Raleigh, NC, in 1999 and formed the band Brothers Grim. The lineup included Adam, the primary songwriter, on lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Jeff Mullins on lead guitar; Jamie Dawson on bass guitar; and Shimer Gradus on drums. Brothers Grim’s first show was September 16, 2000, at Boo’s Hideaway in Raleigh, and the final show with the original lineup was November 9, 2001, opening for Raleigh’s Patty Hurst Shifter at Humble Pie.

After playing under a couple of other names, Brothers Grim was eventually reformed with Adam, Jamie, Shimer, and new guitarist Kris Walz. Gill Langston (Better Times, Between the Gears) played in different incarnations of the band, and J. Scott Gilmore (Local Folk, Needham’s Neighbor) was added in 2007 as a second lead guitarist and lap steel. The second running of Brothers Grim played its last show September 7, 2007, at The Flipside in Clayton, NC.

Brothers Grim played over 70 shows from 2000 to 2007 while bringing their own brand of underground rock and twang to clubs and venues from Raleigh to Chapel Hill, NC, and points beyond. The band was known for its explosive and unpredictable live shows, and the music was hailed for being distinct and diverse as the band moved through sets ranging from original alt country ballads to full throttle rock and back again.

In 2004 Brothers Grim contributed their cover of “Cedartown, Georgia” for the Waylon Jennings tribute album Hoss, and was among the performers at the Hoss CD release party in Raleigh at the Pour House Music Hall June 20, 2004. The event, sponsored by Triangle-based music discussion group Guitartown, was a benefit for Hospice of Wake County. Brothers Grim also opened the Guitartown Holiday Benefit at the Pour House on December 18 of that same year.

In 2005 Brothers Grim released their 6 song EP Bury Me in the Swamp. The EP was nominated in the local Indy Music Awards for Best Country Record and Best Country Song for “You’re Killing Me.” The album was engineered by Gill Langston.

After winning the most online votes in a local band contest, Brothers Grim was the opening band for Raleigh Downtown Live on August 27, 2005. Along with other regional bands they opened for national acts Seven Mary Three and Naughty by Nature.

The bluegrass band Kickin’ Grass has recorded two of Lane’s songs, “Hello It’s Me” for the 2006 album On the Short Rows and “The Filling Station” (original title “Exxon”) on the band’s 2012 release Walk With Me.

Post Brothers Grim, Adam played a couple of solo shows at Raleigh’s Sadlack’s Heroes, notably December 10, 2010, opening for Colin Gawel of Watershed.

Adam and friend Harris Hollingsworth jammed for a couple of years with different drummers and bass players including drummer Tom Scheft from late ‘60s garage band, The Rising Storm. With Adam on vocals and Harris on guitar, the band played loud guitar rock drawing on personal favorites including songs by Urge Overkill, Superdrag, and Iggy Pop. Dubbed The Alias Invasion, the band played one show on February 4, 2011, opening for Skullbuckle at their CD release show.

Currently Adam Lane is writing new music as well as playing older acoustic favorites with longtime friend and Brothers Grim original, Jeff Mullins. The reunion began with the pair opening for Kickin’ Grass’ Eastern North Carolina CD Release show for Walk with Me in New Bern, NC, July 27, 2012. Subsequently Adam and Jeff opened the Guitartown Hopscotch Kick-off Party at Sadlack’s on September 6, 2012. After the Hopscotch show, Adam and Jeff played a series of shows opening for Raleigh, NC, songwriter Anthony Neff. Stay tuned for new music and show dates…
