While other pop musicians are following the trends of extravagant production and lyrics meant to appeal to the masses, Kelly Lynn Barber is keeping it simple and band-based with lyrics that actually mean something to her and her listeners. It’s solely the emotion and power that carries each and every one of her songs. Her ultimate goal is to bring the same emotional experiences to her audience that she has when she listens to the raw music that she loves, and Pop City Life “certainly think(s) she is heading in the right direction.”
Kelly’s refreshingly raw approach to music has catapulted her onto the path of success. In 2013 she teamed up with Next Level Management and began planning out the start of her career. Her debut EP “Cold Reality” was released in April 2014 and immediately captured the attention of local newspapers, radio stations and venues. This led her to perform at the legendary venue The Bitter End in New York City, being featured on the popular website AXS.com, reaching and maintaining the #1 local spot on ReverbNation, being invited to join the organization Tunes For Tots, and finishing within the Top 20 (of over 1,200!) at the 2014 New York Dream Night Talent Search. She’s no stranger to the limelight; at only 17 she had also performed on the Rachael Ray Show with her high school’s Glee Club and now at 20 she already has more than 300,000 total lifetime views on YouTube.
As a child and teenager, Kelly struggled with a crippling case of shyness that caused her to feel closed off from virtually everyone except for those closest to her. As a result, she feels as though she missed out on a lot of social experiences that most people should have at that point in life. At the age of 12, she picked up a guitar and used those frustrations to begin writing. Her song “Done With You,” to be the lead single on her next EP “Breaking Barriers,” personifies her shyness and lets the listener know that she’s ready to move on with her life. The whole EP is about personal strength and not letting anyone take advantage of you in any way. This is her approach to the next chapter in her career - she is taking control of where she goes next and no one is going to tell her “no.”
