Chad Vaughn has been around.
Whether it be traveling the opry circuits from age 8 through high school, switching to punk rock and playing a Warped Tour date at 17, or throwing on a tie-dyed shirt and joining a jam-band that shared the bill with Willie Nelson at 20, he has been a difficult-to-predict musical iconoclast of his own making for his entire life.
"I like too much stuff to pigeonhole myself TOO badly...but I feel like I'd be making an honest statement if I told you I am happy with this EP, that it is a good stepping stone back into the country scene, and that it's likely to only get twangier as time goes on".
If returning to your roots is a natural instinct, Chad Vaughn has been fighting it for a while. "I got really burnt-out and disillusioned with the 'checklist country' that started coming out in the 2000's and 2010's, and, quite frankly, was not interested in making country music because of the banality and commercialism that seemed to have hijacked the music I grew up loving. Thankfully, with the rise of internet streaming services, I was able to discover that there was indeed cool country music still being made. I figured I would try and put my spin on it". While not a STRICT traditionalist himself, Chad Vaughn prefers just that the music be honest, original, and from the heart, rather than a pander to whatever might be currently making the rounds on Music Row.
"The SOUND is always supposed to evolve. It's the vibe, the subject matter, the credibility and attitude that has de-volved. I always wanted to try to make a record that would be considered a 'modern country' record - but that DIDN'T mention truck beds, riverbanks, or midnight beer-bashes".
While the behind-the-scenes rhetoric is strong - the music is solid in Chad Vaughn's debut country EP, which he released digitally on iTunes and Amazon.com on August 8th, 2014.
Chad Vaughn plays around the Kansas City, Missouri metro area in various incarnations - as a solo acoustic artist, as part of various acoustic duos and trios, as well as full-on electric bands, performing his original music and a VAST array of cover tunes at bars, restaurants, weddings, private parties and corporate events.
"I'd like to think I put on one of the only shows in the city where you might hear 'Mama Tried', 'Comfortably Numb', 'Friends in Low Places' and 'Santeria' on the same night - sometimes even in the same set".
Chad Vaughn is currently working on rehearsing and debuting a new band, one he titled simply "The Chad Vaughn Band" or "CVB", for short. "It's going to be a very loud, phasey, but tight-knit country-rock power trio, and it's probably the only band I see myself working with for the foreseeable future". He also has plans to begin recording a full-length studio album in 2015.
It's been a long road, nearly twenty years long, but Chad Vaughn has come full circle in his musical evolution and is now busy carving himself a comfortable niche.
