This unique blend of rhythm and melody has been cultivated as a collage of natural forces, allowing it to become something organic in itself. Being a compliment of the energies that this world has provided. A reflection of life; as a shadow is to light, waves to wind, flower to spring, and art is to man. This is the inter-weaving of contrasts, a well-nourished, living and growing, re presentation of the symphony that is nature. To compare the dynamics of a snow flake, distracts you from the beauty that is the snow flake. To appreciate it for its uniqueness, avoiding measure and placing structure is when its essence becomes visible. This is not an attempt to become, just to be
Keenen Magik is a revolutionary new Hip-Hop band. They came together in November of 2012 when Everett, Wa rapper and EWU student, Keenen, teamed up with DJ and guitarist, JG the Prodigy. JG is former lead guitarist for the band “Seconds Apart”, winner of Perfechter Production’s Big Break competition, for two years until the band’s break-up in June of 2012. Keenen himself has been a major part of Cheney’s local music scene for a number of years, releasing his first solo project, Easy on the Ears (2012) and hit single,The Anthem (2012). Keenen and JG were dorm mates at EWU during their freshman year in ‘09. Fall of 2011, they began performing at house parties and open mics as DJ/rapper. The two performed at over a dozen spots around the Spokane area gaining some attention as a duo. After JG’s departure from Seconds Apart, he introduced Keenen to current drummer, Dre Davis and bass guitarist, Wade Rockstrom. After a single jam session, they realized how well their skill sets complimented each other and agreed to play again in the future. The following week, Keenen introduced them to the idea of officially becoming a band. Two months later they opened for Zion I at the Knitting Factory in Spokane, Wa as their first performance together. The show was successful to say the least. One Tree Music group has invited them back for another performance at the Knitting Factory on Mar. 2nd, and also guaranteed them the final local act of the night.
This band gives you rhythm that is part jazz/blues, and part pop/rock while the vocals deliver playful/intricate lyrics with an attitude that remind you that you are watching a Hip-Hop performance. The sound of Keenen Magik is truly a kind of its own, and as they bind closer together as a band, their sound will continue to push the envelope of rap music as genre.
“We just make sure we represent our different cultures and flavors through our music.”
