Originally from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Matt McElravy has been around music from a young age. His father is a southern gospel musician, and Matt grew up with a wide variety of music in his home. “I can remember hearing country, gospel, blues, jazz, praise and worship, rock, and all sorts of other things growing up,” he says. He discovered his passion for writing and performing music in high school, being involved with jazz bands, choirs, musical theater, and writing and performing his own material at local coffeehouses and open mic nights.
While majoring in Music Business and Technology in college, Matt studied classical piano and played with both big band jazz ensembles and small jazz combos, in addition to having his own trio that performed original songs. It was also at this time that Matt discovered the music of Ben Folds, Billy Joel, Elton John, Gabe Dixon, James Taylor, and others, and developed his own blend of bluesy-rock/blue-eyed soul with jazz and pop influences.
After college, he served as a music director for a mid-sized church in central Pennsylvania, overseeing the bands and tech teams, and writing original songs for congregational worship. During this time, several of his songs started being used throughout other churches both in the US and in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
He relocated to Nashville in the fall of 2009 and has been learning the ropes of the Nashville music scene ever since. “I had never really co-written before I moved here, so that has been a very healthy and stretching experience for me as a writer and a musician.”
Matt cowrites as often as he can in addition to writing on his own, being involved with the music ministry at his local church, and playing writers rounds and other shows locally in Nashville on a regular basis.
